RANTHAMBHOR NATIONAL PARK - Sawai Madhopur

Surrounded by the Vindhyas and the Aravali Hills, amidst vast, arid and denuded tracts of the desert ecology of Rajasthan, lies the oasis of biomass, the RANTHAMBHOR NATIONAL PARK established in 1955, spread over an area of 392 sq. kms. of thick forest with streams and waterfalls. The herbivorous population includes chital, sambhar, blue bull and chinkara. Sambhar deer is the pride of the park. There is no other park in Asia, where theses largest of all Asiatic deer can be seen so frequently during daytime. Wild boars and Langurs (black faced monkey) are a common sight. Among the reptiles, crocodiles can be seen basking in the sun near the lakes. The Tiger is the biggest attraction of this park. According to naturalists, Ranthambhor is one of the best parks in the country for observing and photographing the activities of the tiger. Other carnivores in the park include Leopard, Hyena, Jackal, Fox, Caracal and Jungle cat . Around 80 Sloth bears are known to exist in the park. The park has more than 300 verities of birds. KEOLADEO NATIONAL PARK - Bharatpur

Colorful kingfishers, graceful pelicans, rare Siberian Cranes and trans - continental flies the migratory water - fowl are among the 375 species of birds found in the KEOLADEO NATIONAL PARK. The most spectacular nesting is that of the Egrets, Storks, Herons and Cormorants which make over 10,000 nests every year. This makes the sanctuary one of the outstanding bird havens of the world. The geographical location of Bharatpur is ideal since it is on the main North - South avian route of India. The park covers an area of 29.89 kms. including lakes. Bharatpur was earlier known as the best duck shooting resort in the British empire. After independence in 1956, the state govt. declared Keoladeo as a reserve for birds. In the 1981 this 29.89 kms. of land was upgraded to a National Park. Being a unique bird place the UNESCO has recognized it as a world heritage site. The park is now India's best water- bird sanctuary.

It is truly a paradise of feathered life which provides unlimited opportunities to the bird watchers, wildlife photographers, landscape painters, writers on nature and researchers in biology. The first rain of the monsoon makes the park come alive.. Thousand of egrets, storks, darters, ibises, herons, spoonbills, jacanas and other birds get busy courting, mating and nesting. While the nesting enterprises are dominant on the trees, isolated pairs of saras cranes raise heaps of vegetarian, truncate the mound and make a shallow depression to hold two chalky white eggs. The pair dances, mates and shares responsibilities of raising its brood. The story of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is incomplete without an account of the migratory water- fowl. The most prominent water - fowl coming to this park are bareheaded and graylag geese. Ducks also create a lot of fluttering in the lakes.

The ducks usually found here are pintail, widgeon, common shelduck, ruddy shelduck, shoveler, garganey, teal, green winged teal, mallard, pochard etc. Attracted by the heavy influx of the water - fowl the predatory birds - tawny eagles, spotted eagles, short toed eagles, imperial eagles, and fishing eagles also arrive. They all form the apex of the biological pyramid of the sanctuary and complete the avian food chain of the eco system. There are large herd of Nilgai, chital, wild boar and feral cows in addition to a few herds of sambhar. back to top

SIRISKA TIGER RESERVE - Alwar

The wild spectrum and rich population of wildlife in the open dry deciduous forest of Siriska is a marvel of ecological adaptation and tolerance. SARISKA TIGER RESERVE is situated in the northern part of Aravali hills, nearly 200kms.from Delhi on the Delhi - Alwar- Jaipur Road. An area of 800sq.km, Siriska was declared a sanctuary in 1955 and it became a Tiger Reserve in 1979. In Sariska, wildlife observation at the hole is fascinating during the hot days of April, May and June. Water requirement increases and wildlife activities get restricted to the water holes specially around Kalighati and Slopka. Sambhars Chitals, Nilgais (Blue Bull), chausinghas ( antelope ), jackals, wild boars, langurs etc. visit water holes throughout the day. The tiger appear as around dusk or during the silence of the night. Besides leopard, the hyena, jungle cat and wild dog are the other main predators. Sariska is unique in animal distribution. The wild animals here have seem to decided their area - limits. Slopka is best for observing the sambhar, undi for Nilgai. Four - horned antelopes or Chausingha can be seen in the Pandupole Nallah. Chausingha is exclusively Indian and is the only black buck on earth with four horns. Sariska is also famous for its population of common Langur [Black faced Monkey] and the rhesus monkeys. Talvriksh is where the main population of rhesus exsiss and one can see hundreds of these monkeys at a time. Langurs can be seen in large numbers at Pandupole, Slopka and Kalighati as well. Sariska is also historical significant. The Kankwadi Fort is situated on a small hillock, nearly 22 kms. from Sariska headquarters. It is said that the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb had imprisoned his elder brother Dara Shikoh in this fort. Further away is the famous Neel Kanth Mahadev temple. There are remains of 300 odd Hindu and the Jain temples constructed between the 8th and the 12th centuries A.D. These temples have religious mythological as well as historical significance.
